Looking for one of the hottest after school programs around? You’ve got it with Coding for Kids, our innovative courses that teach computer programming skills through video game design. These fun classes are perfect for kids in grades 3-8 who have great imaginations, like figuring out how things work or simply love technology.

In Coding for Kids, your son or daughter will have a blast creating video games and animated stories. You don’t even have to mention all the cool skills he or she is learning along the way: basic coding and programming, problem solving, logic, physics and more. (We’ll never tell!) It’s a great way to get kids psyched about learning cool STEM skills.

We offer several Coding for Kids courses for your aspiring programmer, including:

  • Grades 3-5: Game Design 101 and 102
  • Grades 6-8: Game Design 201 and 202

How Coding for Kids works

Typically, in these six-week game design courses, kids come in for one hour each week. Every class has a distinct objective and outcome, so your future computer whiz will work toward a goal and feel a great sense of accomplishment.

During each session, your son or daughter:

  • Learns how to create characters, animations, sounds and special effects using kid-friendly Tynker™ technology.
  • Develops mini-stories and builds the skills to design a final video game that he or she can play with friends.
  • Experiments and troubleshoots on his or her programming project, developing important problem solving, logic and computational skills.
  • Collaborates with other kids to challenge and learn from each other — making friends along the way.

At the end of each coding class, your child enjoys a wrap-up activity to reinforce the skills he or she learned in class. Plus, you get a link to your child’s weekly programming project, so you can see and share his or her amazing work.

Looking for new activities to inspire your child outside of school?
Three words: Robotics for Kids!

Robotics for Kids uses fun, hands-on projects to get your child’s creative juices flowing. Your child will learn how to build and program robots with LEGO® bricks and software — all while making friends, developing new skills and having a great time with STEM. For many kids, robotics class is a highlight of their week.

To fully engage and challenge your aspiring engineer, computer programmer or scientist, we have several kids’ robotics programs available:

  • Grades 2-4: Robotics 101 and 102
  • Grades 4-6: Robotics 201 and 202

First timer? Your child is welcome. He or she can jump into Robotics 101 or Robotics 201 without any prior experience. Our teachers are happy to adjust to your child’s ability.

How we teach kids robotics each week

In each Robotics for Kids class, your child and a buddy work together to plan and build a new robot using LEGO® bricks, letting their creativity and imaginations loose. Along the way, they learn science and engineering concepts, such as how pulleys, levers and motors work.

As the kids’ robots take shape, they experiment with LEGO® Education’s award-winning WeDo™ software. They discover how to apply computer programming concepts and find new ways to get their “bot” moving.

Then, the energy levels (and smiles) really reach a high point, as the kids challenge other teams to friendly games or take part in imaginative play.

At the end of each robotics class, your child enjoys a wrap-up activity to reinforce the STEM skills he or she learned in class. (You’ll hear all about it on the way home.)

Math Edge

Inspiring Independent Thinkers and Master Problem Solvers

With Math Edge, our math mastery program for grades 1–5, you can give your child an edge in math in just a few hours per week. A favorite among kids, Math Edge uses a variety of brain-boosting activities to help your child solve problems in cool and engaging ways. (Say goodbye to mind numbing drills!)

With each math lesson, your son or daughter develops problem solving skills, as well as math proficiency, speed and accuracy. You’ll love seeing your child learn to think independently, build math confidence and have a lot of fun.

Having a good math foundation is so important for developing higher-level thinking skills and for being successful in science and technology. Our Math Edge curriculum aligns with what’s taught in school (including Common Core in the United States), so you can rest easy that what your child learns at Sylvan will make an impact in the classroom and far beyond.

How Math Edge works

It’s convenient and fun! You sign your child up for two one-hour sessions per week, choosing the days that work best for your family’s busy schedule. Your child is welcome to sign up with friends (great camaraderie for the kids, easier carpooling for you).

Each session, your child completes brain-boosting activities that grow more challenging with every assignment. Math Edge follows a proven, five-step approach:

  • Learning
  • Practicing
  • Problem Solving
  • Engaging
  • Reinforcing

We flex your child’s thinking skills as he or she works through a series of activities on each topic. This approach ensures your child truly understands and can apply math concepts, while building his or her math confidence.

Math Edge offers a low stress environment. Your child works independently at his or her own pace, while our math tutors offer coaching and encouragement. As your child progresses, our math tutors grade your child’s assignments, sharing personal feedback and helping your child understand errors.

During each session, your child takes a break from individual work and collaborates with a small group of kids to tackle math puzzles, fun brainteasers and other math proficiency challenges. The kids love it, and from a learning perspective, it ensures a deeper understanding of math concepts.

Our math tutors use Sylvan’s proven motivational system to bring out the best in your child. Your son or daughter earns rewards for working hard and achieving goals, including individual and group rewards. When your child achieves individual milestones, our math tutors recognize your child with Certificates of Achievement. (Make room on the fridge for some big honors!) With each session, you’ll love seeing your child’s math confidence, skills, and achievements grow.
